My horse (a 16 y/o gelding) was lame about 2-3 weeks ago and had x-rays done which showed no signs of abnormality. An abscess presented itself 9 days ago and 8 days ago he was completely sound, but yesterday he showed slight signs of lameness again and today he is incredibly lame. Could it be another abscess? I must add that we've been soaking his foot in Epsom salt water before the abscess showed and for four days after

Yes, either there is new or the first did not fully resolve. Let your vet know what is going on. There are different causes for abcesses and figuring out what initiated one can help.prevent future from forming.

I would bet there is another pocket of pus working its way out causing the pain...
Always worst just before it erupts is what I get with my own....
And yes, I have called my vet when it was so bad not sure if it is just a nasty abscess or far worse occurring..

With having so recently done xrays and know nothing was amiss then, chances are it is another abscess...
Hang in there...maybe resume the soaking or use a drawing salve to help if you can determine where the sore is coming from and direct the opening to release pressure, pain and pus from the body.
