Okay so this is the first year I'm blanketing Moon and our barn manager suggested we put a nylon sheet under the winter blanket to help keep the winter blanket clean. The trainer at the barn also does this, but one of the hands thinks it's a bit odd. Do any of you do this? Thanks for reading!

its so cold her i've got 3 blankets on my one mare and 2 on the other . the one with two only has 2 because her heavy weight is much heavier than the heavyweight on my other mare. i dont do it for cleanliness i could care less on if the blanket is clean i wash the blankets once a month and brush the horses in between blanketing. id do it for warmth if nothing else. otherwise its just too much bulk on them . if they dont need all their blankets i adjust according to temp/wind. even though they are in at night. when they are in at night they get all theyre blankets on as they have less room to move around as in not creating body heat..

if the sheet can breath go for it, but otherwise he's going to be baking/sweaty.

I do it all the time. However, I much prefer putting on a dress sheet than an actual nylon sheet. The dress sheets tend to be a fuzzy wool-like material that is warmer and can fit well under another blanket. I am new to this forum and from Australia. I read your post about rugging. In Aus we usually winter rug with a light cotton or felt type under a 'heavier type combo rug'. Nylon rugs wont breathe so the under rug is better to be of a breathable fabric. If shoulder rubs appear use a silky "bib" under the rugs,

I live in MN (so I know how cold it can get in the midwest) and I have had friends use full nylon sheet but that was only because her horse barely grew a winter coat. Using one to keep the regular blanket clean sounds weird, like it or not, it'll get dirty. I would only use one if your horse doesn't get fuzzy enough to stay warm. My horse has enough hair (and body fat haha) to be okay with only a heavy blanket even when it get 40 below with the wind chill

My barn's full of crazies so I came here to ask you guys xD Yeah I was worried about him sweating...hmmm....he's pretty skinny though and his winter coat is pathetic this year, I may just throw the blanket on by itself cause I don't know how breathable the nylon is and I want to avoid him overheating. There's nothing wrong with layering sheets/blankets ( I do it myself), but as stated, just make sure the fabrics are breathable.
