Hello,
I am trying to come up with an effective worming schedule. There is sooooo much information out there it is quite challenging. I have a small boarding facility in Southern New Jersey and currently utilize a 3-way Rotational Program...religiously. I was considering using SafeGuard Powerdose this cylce (January) and hence started to do a little research. I found just as many good reasons for using it as to not use it...and for that matter...every worming program out there. It seems as if our current programs are outdated but there is no solid information for a new approach. Any help, info. on current worming programs local to my area would be of a huge help. Thank you!!!

I don't know whether this helps you out or not but I have been useing the SafeGuard Powerdose cycle/chart for several years with success. We pick up many wormy rescues and need a efficient de-worming program, this works.

Ok, well, some people on here are not going to be happy with me, but I'll share my schedule.

January - Panacur Powerpac (for worms that don't show up in fecals).
- 1.5 dose (by weight) Anthelcide 2 weeks later (for new horses or
if one is beginning to look thrifty).

March - Double dose of Ivermectin.

May - Tape Care Plus (Same as a Double Strongid).

July - Double dose Panacur or Safeguard.

September - Double dose Equimax.
- If the horse gets REALLY itchy they get another double 2 weeks
later to target Neck Threadworms.

November - Double dose Strongid.

The double doses are to take into account of any weight differences since weight tapes aren't perfectly accurate. All of my horses should get more than a tube of dewormer by weight anyway, so I just give the rest of the second tube.

The doubles also cover any wasted dewormer (I have spitters) and assures they get a whole dose. It also helps prevent resistance - there is plenty to kill everything it's supposed to, no worms survive to become immune. Lastly, the dewormers I use are all safe to use in higher amounts, although after everything is said and done the horses are probably getting their recommended amounts, possibly a little more, nothing to cause harm.

The program has been working well and has my vet's approval.

Never herd of double dosing. I use a little more per horse, My QH mare is about 1000lbs but I give her the full dose for 1250lbs.

I never give ivermectin unless its EquiMax. My vet suggested that safegaurd pack once every other year for my horses, since they dont move around alot. But once a year would be ok as well. It kills the little guys that burrow in the intestines and evade the regular dewormers. I have been doing the 6x a year schedule but I think Im going to try 4x a year, and do a fecal a few times. My horses dont leave the farm, and only two horses have came and gone since I got there in July. Both on regular deworming.

what is the difference between safeguard powerdose & panacur power pac???

I don't like using Quest dewormers, too small of a margine of error, especially one smaller and sick horses.

Powerdoses and Powerpacs are the same - I think the power dose is actually a little cheaper.

My vet tells me not to use quest. you have to be very acurate w/ weight, it gets absorbed quickly and she saw a few horses get mouth ulcers from it.
