The plan was to go to a jackpot at this arena and just pay my money and practice, but the jackpot was cancelled so we just had a day there to play around and do some drills and get used to this arena.

I convinced myself to not babysit Squiggs like I always do and just sort of let her go, and everything felt much much better. The only real problem with that was that I got a little to carried away with letting her go and quit turning her at third.

I am just simply over the moon happy that when I went to my horse, sat down and said "whoa" (a bit early as I didnt know what to expect from her), she listened and actually worked pretty good! And that lead change too! I loved it :p

I'm NOT asking for a critique as I have a pretty good idea of what went wrong.

This is the 2nd time I've really run her and I'm super proud of how the whole day went, it was her first time leaving home without one of her herd buddies, in a strange trailer, with a strange horse, and went to a strange indoor building that she'd only been to once before. So, with everything being so different, I can't really be upset with what happened with that run cause everything else we did was flawless.

Aaaand by the way, I counted out how fast this run is, and got about high 16's low 17's or so, so without that third barrel bauble and it actually being a jackpot, we would have placed somewhere, and possibly brought home a check.

I've changed my mind - I'm open to critiques, even though I have gotten some from a few members already.

I also want to know if I rode her well at all?

Nothing I'm going to say will be new.

You didn't have control of her body when you were circling before you started. She was crossfired and she was swinging her butt pretty bad. You should be able to do perfect circles with her anywhere; hence why I've mentioned many times to take her away from the barrels and just work on that.

You didn't quite finish your first barrel turn. She needs to "stay in the turn" for one more stride.

2nd barrel was old habits of swinging butt.

Won't comment on the 3rd.

I do see some improvement; I do. But I really think you would achieve it faster if you forgot about the barrel pattern and just plain taught her to use that hind end. Circles, circles, and more circles. Of all sizes. Get it perfect at the walk. Then get it perfect at the trot. And then perfect it at the lope. THEN go back to the barrel pattern. She 'll do so much better in her turns if you can teach her how to use her butt.

As far as you're riding, I'm on my phone and can't see your hands too well. I can see that when you circle before and when you head to your first barrel, you are leaning to the inside. Stay upright with your weight to the outside.

I agree with beau completely she's cross firing like a green broke horse that doesn't know how to use herself and let's be honest this horse doesn't. Back to the basic circles and round pen work. Another thing your control over this horse is lacking and what is this circling before the pattern? That's a big no no in my book. I think your pushing this horse before she's ready and your blowing her up. She should be able to walk in on a pattern and be controllable. Your going to make it impossible to control her properly before she even gets competition ready. You need to forget the pattern for awhile. I see a horse with a lot of potential here. I think you need to focus on slow work regain control and quit making the arena a place where she's wound up literally. I've ridden plenty of high powered nice barrel horses and they walk in to the arena just fine. You can teach that horse to be manageable without winding her in circles if you take the time and patience to show her. Good luck keep at it.
