My 74 year old dad bought himself a Go Pro type camera, then realized he had no use for it, so he gave it to my kids. Guess who has a new helmet cam!
So I took Rusty out for a trail ride the other night to try it out. Things were going very well until we started going downhill in a big, open field. He sort of stumbled into a trot, and when I tried to pull in his nose to circle him, he started to canter a little... then more... you'll see an awkward moment about halfway through the video. I was trying to pull him in, a bit panicked that he was getting out of control. But then I realized he was going too fast and that even if I could turn him into a circle, I would likely go flying in the other direction, so I decided to just ride it out. I mean, I've ridden a gallop before, so I figured it was better to go with it for a bit rather than keep yanking on him since that was getting us nowhere. I just gave him his head while maintaining some contact (you'll see his ears go forward when I do it), and he threw in a few big strides, then slowed right down, and I was able to bring him back to a walk. So while I don't recommend this, I was so happy that I didn't come off! After falling off Kodak a few times, it is such a relief to find out that I can deal with a little friskiness on the trail with Rusty. We do need to work on a little more compliance, but he really just wanted to stretch his legs I think. After a few strides at the walk, he stopped on his own and turned his head to look at me. Not sure what he was thinking at that point, lol.
