I am currently looking to take my Aunt out West to trail ride sometime this summer. We are trail ride in the Appalachians and have never been out west. She is in her 60's and has always wanted to ride out west. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to take her? We have a week to spare. I would really like to experience as much as we can without have to travel (as in drive) from place to place. Ideally, we would like to fly in, and stay in that location but be able to ride out via horse every day and see numerous scenic views. We don't care for fancy meals or the fancy amenities that come with high end dude ranches. We want simply want to see and experience the best scenery we can. Thoughts or suggestions? I would like to make this trip happen before August.
Thanks for the reply. Do you have any particular recommendations or outfitters that would suggest? We would prefer something a little more rustic with increased emphasis on saddle time and ability to see many different and amazing views.
I, too, live in the East (New England) have the desire to ride out West sometimes. But then I add up the cost associated with such a trip, and it occurs to me that for a week there, I can board my horse for a year.
I looked into this place because they are recommended as a "warm up" and skill gauge for a more intense equestrian vacation by this place.
Vee Bar near Laramie offers more opportunity to do horseback ranch work, and lots of other things, too.(All the fun, without worrying about the cow market or if you have enough hay.)
If a multi-day pack trip into unspoiled Montana wilderness sounds like it would suit you, the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana is fabulous. Go with an experienced outfitter, though.
I did a week at Spotted Horse ranch(I wasn't sure if we could mention names) in Jackson Hole, WY with a friend for her birthday. The cabins were cute and they weren't overly posh, but good food. They did have a pack out trip that we did that was AWESOME... just wish it would have been longer. It was early on so the horses were pretty fresh but not too bad. The pack trip was pretty cool, we took hay up to a hunt camp and stayed a night or maybe 2.. You can get some good deals especially if there's a cancellation, just get on their email and they will tell you. In the morning you get to watch them bring the horses across a bridge to get ready to ride. It was kinda nice to go out and have a horse that you've been riding already saddled and ready to go(definitely not use to that!!) Oh and not have to clean stalls!!
Plus during the down time we had a car so we explored and saw Moose and the Grand Tetons and other things. They also took you to a hot spring and we also did a white water rafting trip that was SOOO great!
That was a great time... could go on and on! lol
