Hello!! I just came across this board in a search the other day, and it seems like a very nice place. So thought I'd post and see what info, ideas, or comments I can get. I have a lot to type, and at times I tend to ramble, so I will apologize now.
Just like a lot of other posters I have seen on here, I used to ride every weekend, summer, school break, or every chance I could when I was younger. Loved it then, and still love it now. Last time I was in a saddle was about 1 year ago, and it had been about 23 years(I am 36) since I had been in one. Nothing better in life than being on a horse.
For the past 2 years now I have been thinking of taking the step and owning a horse or possible a mule. I am not looking at rushing into anything, will not purchase on impulse and of course not doing it alone, will have some of my horse savvy friends help when I plan on taking the step. I know this is a horse message board but just a quick reason why I am looking into mules also. I am looking for a good mountain/trail/hunting partner, and every mule I have seen and encountered have been just awesome out in the hills, so surefooted, not bothered by a thing. Not saying there are not any horses out there with the same awesomeness.
The mules just amazed me.
There are reasons why I am looking into this. One is the amazing bond and connection I felt with the horses when I rode. It was me, the horse, and the outdoors. Another is I would like my 12 year old daughter to experience this wonderful feeling. Just like any girl she loves horses. My son, well, he is 17 and I am sure he will think it's cool once he gets on and around a horse.
I understand and have taken into consideration the cost of owning a horse. I am not a rich person, but I have the funds and means of owning and purchasing one. I don't have a specific breed I want but know what I am looking for. I will not be going at this alone, I have friends who own horses, and know horses so I will have help. I will need a little refresher course on some basics, but it will come back. Looked into leasing a horse, but there are none in my area. This may sound selfish, I don't think I would want to lease even if there were some in my area. I would not be able to take the horse camping, to our cabin, or ride whenever I want to.
This is something I have talked about only to my friends, but not with my family(my boyfriend, and my 2 kids). They will think I am crazy, but that's fine. My responsibility, my time, and my pleasure, that's how I see it.
After so many years of not riding, am I crazy for even considering or be thinking about this??
