So. Here we go. I would like some feedback on a potential breeding. I would like to get as early a foal as possible (We live in Texas, so weather is mild early in the year).
My mare is a sorrel Quarter Horse, by Dual Jazz [cuttingbred by Dual Pep - LTE of nearly 60k and offspring earnings of nearly 850k] out of Ima Timin Girl -foundation bred- Both lines trace almost directly back to the King Ranch breeding program, and its obvious that she's cutting, through and through. She has a great mind, and will do anything you ask her to do. Even if it's not a good idea from a human standpoint.... *cough* She has a reining handle on her, and I suspect has worked cattle before.
I really like her conformation. I had someone tell me her pasterns weren't good - I can't see a problem, but then I don't stare at horse's pasterns for a living, so I very well could be missing something. (Although the person diagnosed her from just a quick glance) I am aware of her roman nose, and I honestly kind of like it. I any case, her head won't make much of an impact on ability. From the pictures I took, her back seems long-ish, but she really doesn't look long in person. I've never had someone tear her apart, but feel free to give advice - I really want to learn, and I won't start bawling at a critique, I promise.
Pedigree - Jazz Timin Quarter Horse
The stallion I am interested in is Colonels Lone Gun, by Gunner. He has a proven record [2003 APHA World Jr Reining Top 10 Finalist, 2004 APHA World Jr Reining Top 5 Finalist & ROM in Reining] and his offspring have been successful. He is a bay splash, and I read somewhere that by the looks of his offspring, he is probably homozygous for the splash gene. (I know I sound shallow, because 'a good horse is never a bad color,' but this is a real plus... I absolutely swoon over Gunner-bred horses). He also seems to throw awesome conformation consistently. This is my biggest peeve. Call me a perfectionist, but I want to breed a horse that is capable of anything I ask (within reason) - I don't want to have limitations from the outset.
Note: I haven't been able to find a photo of his dam - Jays Ace - and if anyone has a link, I'd love to see her.

From what I see in his offspring, he is heterozygous for black and heterozygous for agouti. Looking at my mare's pedigree (As a sorrel horse doesn't show any other genes) they are all sorrels, three generations back. There are two bays in the fourth generation, and red and black all over the place after that. She obviously doesn't carry the black gene, but agouti is unknown. I would assume heterozygous... which would leave a 50% Sorrel (And if someone could enlighten me on the inheritance of the flaxen trait in sorrels, I would greatly appreciate it) 35% bay, and 15% black, assuming she is het for agouti.
What I'd like to know is the viability of this cross - from everything I've researched, I haven't seen a Dual Pep cross on the Gunner line, or any major cutting on this particular stallion. The foals career path depends on it's quality and gender. A stud quality colt or *really* nice filly will likely either be sold as an uncut show prospect or sent to a trainer. A gelding quality or filly would probably become my reining horse and be trained and shown. I'm also curious about the potential of this cross for cutting. I haven't really seen any floppy eared, bald faced horses making a splash in the cutting industry, but is there potential?
Lastly, I'd like to thank everyone in advance for taking the time to help me out. Anywhere that I'm mistaken on some account, please correct me. I want to learn as much as I can for future reference. And please don't tear me apart. I'm a teenager - I don't know everything (I know, an oxymoron).
