This is sort of an odd question, but I am not sure if my horse needs boots. We mostly trail ride and he doesn't over extend his back legs. I'm not sure of the purpose of a lot of different boots. Can someone explain boots to me please?

we have boots for our mare because her feet are tender on rocks/stones. We will probably get some for my gelding as well in case we trailer somewhere where it is very rocky. As far as I know (which isnt much..haha) that is what they are for.
Boots are used to protect the soles of barefoot horses, especially on very rocky terrain. If you trail ride and your horse doesn't have a problem with sole bruising, you probably don't need boots. All our mares are barefoot and I've never used boots on any of them.
So far we have only ridden through grassy fields or on a well trodden dirt path. If I did want to ride in a rocky terrain, what type if boots should I use?
So long as you aren't riding hard, boots on the trail aren't all that necessary. I've actually ruined support boots in one ride because they have gotten burrs and fox tails stuck in them beyond repair. However, if I am not riding through fields I would use Classic Equine Legacy boots or the Professional's Choice SMB Ventech Elites.
