My three year old gelding has never had his sheath cleaned. I've noticed lately that he has icky spots between his upper legs and has a bit of build-up on his... you know. I've NEVER cleaned a gelding before... What exactly do I do and how? I've been reading online, but keep getting confused... I've heard that you can use regular Dial bathsoap and water... is that true? What can you use besides the sheath cleaning stuff that you can buy, because I don't have the money to buy any...? I was going to get a vet out to do it for the first time, but since I can't (money issues), it's going to be me doing it.

The sheath cleaning song

The sheath cleaning song

Sing it to the tune of "Hello Mother, Hello Father."

How's it hangin'?
So much cleaner.
Aren't you glad I
washed your wiener?
I'll admit it's
kinda creepy
that I had to stick my arm up in your pee-pee.

It was sticky.
It was gunky.
It felt icky.
It smelled funky.
It was cruddy,
It was crusty--
when you stuck it out, it creaked like it was rusty.

After half an
hour of toilin'
and of squirtin'
baby oil in,
you're as fresh there
as a daisy.
Either this means I love you or else I'm crazy!!!

OMG! I'm rolling on the floor, Spyder! I'm gonna have to share that!

As far as actual cleaning, I have 2 geldings, and I've not really ever given them a "good cleaning". Usually when I give them a bath, if they "present arms", I'll use the hose & the sweat scraper if there is crud there. It might take a little, but it will come off. I have heard about people using antibacterial soap, but it really needs to be rinsed well.

Good luck!

Haha OMG spyder that is the FUNNIEST thing I've ever heard!!!

Anyway, I just use Dawn dish soap. Its a very mild soap. My vet told me to use it. Anywho, I normally touch him until he drops and then pick out the crud from inside the sheath. Then just apply a small ammount of Dawn and work it to a gentle lather, then rinse, rinse, RINSE!!

I like Dove dish soap.. very mild.

1. WEAR GLOVES!!!! that stench is nasty and it sticks with you a few days if you don't.

2. Use warm water if possible.. and apply a liberal amount of soap on the glove and stick it in his sheath.. you can go pretty much up to your elbow! just work it around really good and start picking out the crud.. wait like 10 minutes to let to soap have some time to work and pick out the crud. It may take up to 30 minutes for him to get comfortable and drop (so you can clean the penis) if he drops at all.

3. On the head of the penis is the pee hole and there is a crease around the pee hole which is wear the bean is located. Take your finger and go all the way around in there to make sure you get it out.

4. Rinse reallly really really good!

Thanks...

I just hope no one comes around while I'm cleaning him.. I don't think it'd go down too well. lol.

Whatchutalkinabout?!!! I gotta clean my mare, LOL!

I've found that on mares that have foaled, they get what I call "Cheese Shingles" in between their teats. It smells just as foul as smegma (the technical name for the cheese that forms on a male horse's penis). So i just use a gentle soap when it needs to be cleaned =)

I've come to find I only see this in mares that have foaled. I'm guessing because the skin around their teats had stretched and grown when filling with milk, then got stretched even more and pulled when the baby was nursing. So when the milk dried up, the excess skin remained =)

I live by a busy road, and when i clean my geldings people honk at me. So far no one has called the Sherriff or the SPCA! ;D After doing so many degrating and disgusting things with horses (NOTHING DIRTY!! stuff like dressing really nasty wounds, draining puss out of an abcess, etc) I have found that i don't really care what people think anymore, LOL! Cleaning a gelding is just another one of those "wonderful" little perks of horse ownership!

All the mares at the barn get their teats cleaned. Apperently there is a build up.

I seen a step by step guide to sheath cleaning, actually a few. and they all say wear gloves, make sure nobody is watching, rinse well, and make sure you have a good speech for the person who will show up even though you took all precautions to ensure you'd be alone.

Lol.
I have to clean my mare about once a month...

I cleaned my boy the other day... surprisingly, he was perfect and didn't mind it at all...

Heres an AWESOME site on sheath cleaning for those interested:
http://www.equusite.com/articles/health/healthSheathCleaning.shtml

I have two I have to clean just as soon as the weather warms up. Sammy is just nasty...Loki probably is as well. I normally only clean my dude's once a year, it's generally advised not to do it more than twice a year as you can kill the good bacteria in there.

Also, Excalibur soap is your friend, and shoulder length gloves. Good luck xD

I:
Run my hand under a hose and put some soap on it. IDK what soap I use, since we just stick random soaps into ketchup bottles and use them. lol.
Stick it in [ewww] rumage around for a little while, pull your hand out, wash it off and rub off whatever came on into a bucket- do it over again. :)

I've never been able to completely clean it correctly because when I put my hand in, he swishes and picks up his foot like he wants to kick me. :( I just don't want to hurt his thing if I go in there and he hasn't dropped it. I always spray water in it when I hose him down and I pick stuff off of it when I can. I guess I'll have to suck it up and just do it, regardless of what he thinks. :P

To the tune of "If you're happy and you know it"....

If it's hanging and you see it lube your hands
If it's hanging and you see it lube your hands
If it's hanging and you see it
Grab it quick it's time to clean it
If it's hanging and you see it lube your hands.

If it's peely and it's crusty pick it off
If it's peely and it's crusty pick it off
If it's peely and it's crusty
and the smell is kind of musty
If it's peely and it's crusy pick it off

If his weenie has a beanie dig it out
If his weeny has a beanie dig it out
If his weiner has a ******
Pull it out and he'll be cleaner
If his weenie has a beenie dig it out

Now he's happy and you know it wash your hands
Now he's happy and you know it wash your hands
It's a job that's kind of kinky
And now your hands are really stinky
But he's happy and you know it wash your hands.

hope this will help, at least make sheath cleaning time more amusing as your humming these songs away :0)
