Hard, scab like thing on leg?

Our mare has had this going on on her leg for about a week, at first we just thought she had scraped it kicking trough the fence at her new neighbor and treated it as such however it has become very hard and slightly raised almost. It isnt tender but was swollen the first two days, however she is prone to swelling in that leg when she acts silly, due to a fused hock. Are we just being ridiculous and it's a cut healing awkwardly? It was already "scabbed" over when we found it, it isn't obvious unless you look for it. Should we soak it?? We havent picked at it becauae we arent sure what it is and dont wantto further the issue. We do have the vet coming out next week to do teeth and such and will have him take a look, but figured id post here in the meantime Any ideas more than welcome!

i cant see clearly, but it might be mud fever if the leg has been damp or shes been stood in mud or wet conditions. its very common here in england on the feathers of the legs. the best treatment is to keep it dry. totally dry. as dry as you can. you can try a mixture of sulphur and oil which is used more n heavy horses like shires as a preventative. if she gets muddy bring her in let it dry and brush with a hard brush until all the mud is away from the skin. do not hose. it needs to be dry. Dry. Dry. Dry. :)

She's too much of a priss to be a clutz haha. I think everyone's right about it just being a thick scab, it's coming off like one now. She's barefoot all around and it'd take some mad ninja skills for her to kick the back of her leg haha. I was just worried it was some unknown crazy fungus that would eat her leg off, but alas she just might survive, leg and all.

Does she wear shoes? Or is it in a spot where she might be kicking it with her other foot? One of my mares has a spot on the back of one of her front legs where she sometimes hits it with the other foot and it will make a little wound, bleed, scab, etc... Sometimes it takes a long time to heal and gets a thick scab because she kicks it again and again before it's had a chance to heal. She's a clutz!

I would guess that it is nothing more than a thick scab. If she isn't favoring the leg more than regular soreness would account for, so long as there is no heat and/or swelling at the wound site, she doesn't appear to be in pain when you press on it, and there is no puss, then I would just leave it be. Some wounds scab thicker and harder than others for some reason. If it is not showing any signs of healing in the next month or so, then I might start to worry. Until then, just keep an eye on it.
