Jumping Advice

My friend filmed my lesson today, and what I most need to work on are a couple of bad habits I have jumping... I've heard my instructor mention these things, but seeing them on tape really reinforces it.

If you guys have any suggestions on what I can do to solve these bad habits (exercises, things to keep in mind, etc...) I'd really appreciate it:

-My leg is too far forward at the canter and when I jump. I need to get it underneath me more... on the flat it's too far underneath me, and I need to get it more forward, but cantering and jumping are the exact opposite.

-I haven't jumped real height in ages as I've been dealing with fear over jumping since I suffered an injury on a green horse awhile ago... now that I've gone from crossrails to 2'3"-2'6" (still not big I know, but better than x-rails  ), my instructor says I sort of tip my pelvis forward and stand up over the jump rather than close my hip angle and stick my butt back

-My toe sticks out. My instructor says it's interesting because, unlike most people, I still have my knee on the saddle, but I bend my calf and toe out... I'm trying to get used to using the INSIDE of my calf rather than the OUTSIDE which I've been relying on for so long... that's been a habit I've dealt with for ages now.

Sorry this is so long, but I'm upset that these things are holding back... I feel like even though I've FINALLY gotten confident enough, now I feel like I'm back at square one with these petty problems. :?

Any advice?

Honestly just being aware that you're doing these things will help. Now that you've seen it for yourself, check up on yourself frequently, and make yourself conscious of any postural things you may be doing wrong.
I'm sure someone else will be along to give you exercises to work on, but at the moment I can't think of any - how strange is that? My brain's dead hehe.
Best of luck! And welcome back to the riding world, ain't it grand? ;)

ok..don't go by this just because i said it..wait until someone like JDI says it would be good..because im not even sure this would be good so i don't want to mess up your riding :D
well for putting you leg forward on the flat i would suggest lowering your stirup length.and for putting your legs back in jumping i would suggest going into 2 point like 3 strides betore the jump and it might push your leg back.but like i said, wait until someone approves because im not sure if it would mess up your riding or not.and don't go all balistic on me guys...just say no don't try that! thanks..haha

As I said in one of my last replies in a different post, lots of work on the lunge line will do wonders. Also if you do a lot of non stirrup work you will be forced to keep your lower leg where it needs to be.

If you are working with a trainer, make sure you bring these concerns up to him/her.

It depends on how her stirrups are right now... if they're too short, there might be an issue, but if they're too long, riders' legs tend to be unstable as well, more so than a too-short stirrup.
And as for the two-point suggestion... not sure. Depends on how her position is regardles... gosh, I was no help at all there!!
M2G had a very good idea, riding on the lunge without stirrups or reins will REALLY help - especially if you get good enough to ride with your eyes closed.
Best of luck, keep us posted!!
