I have a mini horse that is 21 years old. He's in great health. Before this summer he has had a normal turnout schedule (Out all day and into the late afternoon, in his stall at night.) This summer to avoid heat and bugs, my barn decided to do reverse turn out (out at night, in stall during day.) He adjusted to this great. I've always wanted him to be outside 24/7. Now that I know how he is outside at night as well as day, It got me thinking about it more seriously. We live in New England and the snow can get nasty as well as below freezing (winter nights are normally in the 20s.) He hardly wears a blanket since his coat is so thick. He would have a nice run in. I'm just nervous about him outside in the cold nights. Am I being too sensitive? What are everyones thoughts and experiences with 24/7 turnout? Thanks!

If the run in shed can protect him from the prevailing winds, wouldn't that make it about as warm as a stall? I mean, around here stalls are not that much warmer than the outdoors. It's not like they are insulated .

I live in New England, my horses have free access to pastures or a box stall or a roofed shelter. I do blanket them below 15 degrees (and if it drops below 5 they get heavyweight blankets), but since they aren't clipped it's probably just for me. Certainly my pony doesn't need a thing, she becomes a polar bear in winter. At least during the day they hardly ever come in. They like to spend the night near or in the stalls though. I've seen them dozing out in the pasture in a sleet storm. Horses are much tougher and cold hardy than people think.

I have 2 minis that always have free access to their run-in. Unless there's food in there they rarely use it.
My horses have done well with free choice 24/7. But do you have that choice in a boarding facility?
