So Thunder the Shire has had oil issues since I bought him. Changes in diet, exercise, housing, grooming, or shampoos don't seem to have any effect on his greasiness - at any time of the year, if you pet him your hand will come away covered in brown-black gunk that looks identical to petting a horse that's been fly sprayed. I thought, in the beginning, it was because he was a stud colt, but he was gelded over a year ago so obviously that's not it. Is it a draft horse thing? His mane and tail are very oily as well, to the point where it's difficult to wash the mane and tail because water tends to bead off of it. They also had a terrible dreadlock-y effect until I chopped the majority of it off. Using ridiculous amounts of detangler works … but then he's left with not only his usual gunk, but the detangler gunk as well.
It's not terrible to deal with in the nicer months, since I can give him a bath and except for his mane and tail he stays fairly clean-ish for a week or two, but during the long winter months when it's too cold to wash him he gets gross. October to April is a very long time to be gross. I tried not using soap at all for several months, thinking that perhaps that much washing was stripping his coat, but the only effect that had was to make him even oilier. I use soap on Dreams maybe twice a year, if that - Thunder needs so much more.
I haven't noticed anything else wrong with his coat - no dandruff, no scurf, no rain rot or what have you. His coat is nice and thick and even and oily and greasy and gross. You can't tell either, until you pet him. He'll look gorgeous until you touch him lol. And even after you pet him, he just looks dusty … meanwhile you're scrubbing gunk off your hand. Have any of you encountered this?
