I mentioned them to my farrier the last time he was out (as a joke, I wasn't being serious, my horse is barefoot) and there was some mention of pigs flying and the day I bought a plastic horse is the day he'd nail on a plastic shoe.

Horseshoes should be shaped to fit each individual hoof, not the other way around. You can't change the shape of a pre-done plastic shoe. My farrier's biggest pet peeve is when someone takes a metal shoe and hacks away the horse's hooves until they fit the shoe, instead of changing the shoe to fit the hoof. I heard all about it as he was yanking the shoes off a recently purchased pony and trying to salvage what was left of the poor thing's hooves.

Very good point. I had not thought of the unable to shape it fact.

 

OMG I think Hunter would totally disown me if I put pink shoes on him lol.

 

Alwaysbehind: they come in nearly every color! Lol i love it.
Delfina: that's sad :/ I'd never let a farrier do that to my horse. My farrier however is trying these new shoes on his own horses first. But this is a good point to bring to my attention. I agree that a horseshoe should be fit to the horse.

So I asked my farrier & he said that you can shape these shoes to fit the horse. I'm really thinking about putting these on Mocha, if 4H requirements are okay with them.

To fit them, you just shave/cut around the edge until they conform to the hoof. My farrier has been using polyurethane shoes of another brand with very good results. He'd never heard of HHW, but I'm trying to get him to experiment on my old crippled horse. Either way, I think we'll try one kind of plastic shoe or another the next shoeing cycle.

Don't know about that particular type, but I like the wide web - provides a little support to the sole. I don't like the idea of the bar, but perhaps that can be cut out. Plastic shoes are a bit better than steel in regard to shock absorption/vibration but are pretty much the same when it comes to effects on hoof function.

 

The plastic shoes are also said to improve the joints drastically because of the good absorption. Horse who haves used them are said to move much better. & thanks Bubba for giving me insight on how to shape the shoes. Let me know how they work for you. I've heard nothing but good reviews from people who have used them.
