In a recent thread, @walkinthewalk threw it out to the universe (& HF is absolutely that for us, right?!) that we should have a thread for those of us whose horses are 20 and older.

Personally, I would like to also hear about horses that you've had in the past that lived over 20. We need to honor those Oldies but Goodies as well.

So, let's start this off and see where it goes. Answer any or all of these questions as you desire.

1. Horse's name: Chuck
2. Breed: QH
3. Age when first owned: 4.5
4. Current age: 21.25
5. Recent pix

1. Peaches
2. QH- Grade-never could figure out "who" she was, but she had these really nice "automatic" lead changes if you would shift your weight on her. Once, also hunkered down and chased the calves that got loose into her pasture back to where they belonged like a cow horse.
3. Age when first owned- Over the age of 25 (according to the vet)
4. Passed away at 35+ (had her for 10 years)
5. Pic I'm attaching is when she was in her early 30s
She has been my favorite horse to own. She is the reason that I bought my current mare, who looks suspiciously similar, lol.

1. Horse's name: Toofine, registered as 'He's Ultimately Fine' - give my middle school aged self credit, I came up with the registered name (he came with his shortened name) and I'm still shocked that I was capable of such a good name.
2. Breed: Arabian x Rocky Mountain
3. Age when first owned: 9
4. Current age: 25
5. Recent pix

6. And a few throwback pix for fun

Well this thread is off to a great start!👍🤠👍🤠

I would like to point out the good bone on all of these horses, regardless of breed or Crosses😍😍

@walkinthewalk: How blessed you were to have all these beautiful horses in your life... How blessed they were to be with you to the end of their lives!

Sonny definitely had the saddlebred stance in the first picture. I can see the Arab a little bit in him in the second picture. Was he a character?

What a beautiful, fine face on Fury. Morabs... Delicious!

Duke was downright majestic!

What a pretty boy Streeter was. It's hard to tell in this picture. How many hands was he?

Joker... All I can say is I know you adored him with every fiber of your beingI Lucky boy.

@Horse & Dog Mom thank you❤❤

Fury was supposedly Lippet Morgan and Egyptian Arab. I had no reason to doubt the couple I bought him from; that is what they were told when they bought Fury when he was very young.

Streeter was only 13.3H a fantastic childrens horse. He was Polish bred - straight back to Skowronek on his top side. I had got him out of a neglectful situation with really stupid owners. When I called his breeder, she was mortified to hear what had befallen him. I assured her Streeter would have the rest of life with me.

My Sweetie Boy Joker — there was no other like him, but I loved all of my horses deeply, each for their own personalities.

of all my seniors, Streeter had the best sense of humor with Joker not far behind🥰🥰

Duke, Streeter, and Rusty (The Big Three) moved with me from PA to SoCal then to Tennessee for retirement. Duke and Streeter are both laid to rest on this farm. Rusty is the last of the three. I am hanging onto him tooth and nail, but I have told the vet and the critter chiropractor to haul me up short if I don’t see slippage in him like I should.

Denial is one of the worst things a senior horse owner can possess, I imagine many of us are guilty—-

I will add my Teddy. He was "about eight" when I got him four and a half years ago, and now he's "a little over 20." So, yes, he has aged fairly quickly LOL. He's an absolute sweetie, the kindest and gentlest of my horses. He's the boss of all of the others, but he's a nice boss who just wants everyone to get along. He's not very photogenic, though.

I rode him for about two years, at which points something was just not right with him, and all sorts of diagnostic work couldn't quite pinpoint the issue. He's a pasture pet now.

@ACinATX: I can relate to having a horse that was not photogenic. The local newspaper, when we lived in Wiisconsin, was doing a New Years Day two-page spread on my husband and his work with children. They wanted to know a little bit about him and he was the one who got me into horses so he brought that up. They wanted to do a photo shoot where our first horse was boarded at. We were out there for 2 hours and could not get a good picture with either our horse's eyes open and/or his ears in some sort of attractive position. The newspaper went to print. Many people knew how wonderful our horse was, so when people saw the pictures they just laughed.

EDIT: I love Teddy's sweet and sleepy face in that picture with your family!

I love that it's been so long since I've been on the forums (got roped into silly facebook horse groups and they just don't have the same community feel as there was here) and that I'm seeing familiar usernames! Love also seeing all your seniors!

I have been lucky enough to see 2 horses into their senior years, even though both were a bit close to their senior years when they came into my life.

We'll start with my first, and also heart horse who I lost far too soon and very unexpectedly :(
1. Horse's name: Berry Flamable (Bear)
2. Breed: Registered Purebred Arabian (He was linebred Bask and a grandson to Huckleberry Bey).
3. Age when first owned: 16
4. Age When Passed: Less than a month into 23.
5. Pictures:

Our last picture together at UT Animal Hospital. One of the worst days of my life and I still tear up looking at his pictures, and miss him constantly.

After losing Bear, Doc and I became extremely close, we helped each other mourn. Bear was the only horse Doc ever truly bonded with (though thankfully now I found another Arabian with a similar personality that he is bonded to now, and all is well in his world again!)

And now, my other senior horse, who thankfully is still with us, Doc!
1. Horse's name: Doc (his registered name still makes me giggle because it doesn't suit him at all, Black Market's Undertaker)
2. Breed: Registered Tennessee Walking Horse
3. Age when first owned: Knew him since he was 18, he became officially mine at 23.
4. Current Age: He'll be 27 next month!
5. Pictures:

Doc & his new best buddy, Rowan who came into our lives back in October. Couldn't not have an Arabian in my life, haha.

Doc is a very special boy and have a fun little backstory on how he came into my life. He was a big lick horse before my friend Nancy bought him back in '03 when he was 8 years old, where she instantly pulled him out of that life, gelded him and gave him a life of love, tons of camping & trail riding adventures. I met Doc & Nancy the same day I met Bear in 2015 when he was being delivered to the boarding barn Nancy was also moving Doc to. Nancy's since retired from riding, and gifted him to me where he's living his life out his life here on my farm where we do plan to get him back out on the trail once all of us are conditioned and ready. He's one of those worth his weight in gold horses. He's had everyone from babies (my niece got up on him with me when she was less than a year old!), to people with special needs on him.

Love this idea! There is, of course, my girl...

1. Horse's name: Elle (aka Precious Cargo)
2. Breed: born in Germany, Hanoverian parents, but registered Oldenburg and Canadian Warmblood
3. Age when first owned: 22.5, purchased for $1 from my coach when she wanted to get out of having school and personal competition horses
4. Current age: 26 as of this past Saturday!
5. Recent pix -- see below!
6. I'm adding one: maintenance meds? Previcox 1/4 pill 1x/day (mild arthritis and just general stiffness), prednisolone 10 ml 1x/day (breathing, and has the side benefit of helping her joints and movement). Still enthusiastically, fully riding sound with these meds.

For more pics, of course, see my recent birthday thread. 🤣
