What Irks YOU?!

I've been thinking recently about all the little things that irk me, pet peeves if you will. Some of them are big, some minor...but all the same they're annoying, bad habits, and sometimes dangerous. Here's some of mine to start us off...

- people with pushy horses that are afraid to push back. I'm sorry, when your horse is rearing, striking, and kicking at you, cooing in a soft voice is NOT the right way to correct it. I'm not saying beat your horse, I'm saying tell him who's boss and sort out your crap.

- when novice/new owners take on abused/aggressive horses. STOP DOING THAT! Only bite off what you can chew, nevermind how freaking "cute" they are...without help, you're bound to hurt them, get hurt, or both. Just stop.

- training at warp speed. WHY?! You're going to have to go back and redo it all anyway...no sense in forcing a frame on a 3 year old if they're going to be strung out again by 5 because it wasn't taught in the first place.

- people that think there is only ONE way to correctly train any one horse. I'm sorry, BULL. What works for one may not work for another. And what worked for the other may send the first into a frenzy. There are hundreds of ways to get the same end result...it's a matter of what works for the HORSE.

I know I have more but I'm interested to see some replies. Please keep your points short, no huge novel explainations needed...but give reason.

Let's see 'em!

People who think horses are tender creatures that need to be spoiled, and that horse ends up rotten with 10000 behavior issues, and then they're like "AWW! Aint he sweet!" It's like "He's trying to bite you, not give you a hug." "It's a love bite!" "No, horses aren't kinky. Sorry."

I'm not dwelling, I'm stating. I'm creating a topic where people can vent on what "gets their goat". Can be as simple as someone letting their horse be lippy...eventually, they're going to pinch skinand it won't be cute then, will it?

I don't like when people let their horses paw without reprimending them. And then I have to go and fill the hole to China that they've dug. xP

I also find it annoying when people talk too often in a high ptched voice to the horses.

lol totaly agree. and what else irks me is when pple who havent got a clue about horses think they are going to buy an untrained foal for thier young child, and that the foal and the child are going to "grow up together" that is just asking for total disaster.

and those extremely competitive parents who freak out on their kids when they dont win first place, get bucked off, even when the kid did nothing wrong.

and the way quarter horses are trained with their heads dragging on the ground going negative warp speed, and looking half dead, robotic and lame. (im not meaning to be offensive im just stating my opinion plz dont take it personaly)

trainers [one in particular that i know] who gets ****** at other trainers for 'steping on their toes' or 'instructing their students' when all they do is say something encouraging to the rider. seriously ! get over yourself....

people who think its okay to bring their 2 freak horses, who cant even lift a hoof much less hold it up, to get done by the farrier in the indoor arena when 4+ people are riding/lunging in there & there are many other places to go to get the same job done.

I have many but I will limit them to a few. Go ahead, judge away if you must

- People who insist on getting into an argument with me about what a warmblood is and isn't. I don't care, I have my opinion, and it will never change!

- people who push their horses entirely too fast. Especially in eventing. Going from Beginner Novice to Preliminary in a year is not acceptable unless you are a professional and your horse is older!

- people who judge others based off of one statement they make

- people who are rich and snotty about it. Go out and buy 60K horses, and then push them, use them, and throw them out like garbage.

whew. that's about it for now :)

I like people like that because I get to buy them for meat prices, fix them and resell them for an obsene profit. Well maybe not obscene.

I don't like it when people think that bits are cruel or that a horse will be crippled if it stays shod all the time.

I just don't like those people because of what they do to the horse. I know of a woman with a great horse who she has pushed too fast and her horse's mind is on the brink of insanity. it's sad.

People that sit on their couches watching Parelli videos and don't ever go out and lay a hand on thier horses.

people who make up a million excuses about how it was the horse's, Vet's Trainer's, previous owner's, Farrier's, dog down the street's fault. When they just need to look at what they are doing and take responsibility.

I will probably always consider myself a novice no matter how many times I fall off a horse:) It keeps my mind open to learn new problem solving methods.

People who think every saddle on earth will fit every horse. Seriously. It seems like every horse person out here thinks I'm psycho and spoiling Lacey horribly because I refuse to ride her in a saddle that obviously doesn't fit her (but they think it does fit her...even when tree is basically on her withers, "oh a cutback pad will solve that!", I don't agree!). And they complain when their horses buck and have weird undersaddle issues. Pain much?

People who complain about their horse's issues when they don't spend enough time working said horse to fix the issues. I am totally guilty of this and it irks me.

People that can't back down and admit when their method isn't working.

Ignorant people in general.

My BO's family who rudely tease me constantly about how "horribly" I spoil Lacey when she is SO much better behaved than their horses. She may be feisty but she would never even think of biting me, unlike their horses that bite all the time. And anyway, she's an old lady, she's made it this long, she deserves to be babied, within reason of course. I may buy her things and keep her looking cute, I may braid her tail, I may be kinda obsessive over whether the saddle fits before I ride, and I may ride her bitless because she goes better that way, but that absolutely does not mean that I'm less of a horsewoman. And it's certainly not a reason to make fun of me. Lacey's obviously happy and she obviously loves me, can they say the same for their horses?

This is an excellent thread! haha

I cannot stand to go to rodeos and see kids on horses that are way too much for them, and then the horse does something wrong and the parents go crazy on the horse or thier kid or both. They don't realize it's their fault.

- People who go out and jerk, pull and saw on there horses mouth and then when they still don't have control, they get a more severe bit.

- People who think because i am young I don't know anything about horses, but when I ask them to show me something they haven't a clue what I am talking about

- People who say they are "cowboys" or "cowgirls" because "daddy bought me a pony when I was a little boy/girl

-People who breed because they want to see cute foals running around, and the fail to notice that it eats, poops and sometimes you can't sell them. And they don't relize how most of those BYB horses end up..on a meat hook and in a can.

sorry I am done ranting now

Amen to these ones!

I used to get adults p*ssed at me because they'd tell me their horses couldn't be caught or couldn't ride in a bit because they'd rear or their horse just can't stand still. I walked up to that man's horses, ignored the horse that wouldn't be caught, and gave all sorts of pats and scratches to the other horses while ignoring the hard to catch horse. Guess who walked right over and let me halter him? The guy was mad that I proved him wrong. That horse that couldn't be ridden with a bit? I put a snaffle in and rode her around. Didn't have one problem with her.

-I hate it when I see these rodeo kids running around with huge bits and yanking the horses around when they obviously couldn't sit the canter without holding the horn, or steer a horse with gentle pressure, only know that legs are for asking for speed and that the bit is to make the horse turn and stop. No offense to rodeo people. I used to compete in it. It's just this is where I see this type of riding the most compared to other events.

-When people breed horses that shouldn't be bred. I don't care how much you love your mare if she has a glaring or serious conformation fault don't breed her! We've got enough fugly horses in the world we don't need more when there are dirt cheap nicely build ones waiting for a home.

-People who envy how well other horses are trained but do nothing to try get their horse trained up that well.

-People who let their horses walk all over them. It's a 1,000 pound animal. It should NOT be bossing your around.

No no, rant away...that's kind of the purpose of this thread. I think I'm agreeing with quite a few of the other posters.

I think our common peeve is human ignorance and/or neglect to the health, training, and overall wellfair of the horse.

People who claim their horse's dangerous behaviour is because "she's crazy/hot-blooded/enegetic etc." No, if you let go of her mouth and stop trying to get her to do things she doesn't have the training or the strength to do and get her a properly fitting saddle (totally agree with you Wallaby!!!!) then maybe she wouldn't rear and threaten to flip herself.
And parents who buy green horses for their novice children because "they learn more that way." :?

When A horse has behavioral problems, its automatically blamed on "ABUSE". When really they have no clue about the horses past.

"Careful she bites!"
Do you correct her?
"No She was abused"
Do you know that for a fact?
" No but look how shes acting"

**(Beats head on desk)**
I have heard some of the STUPIDEST comments from young horse owners.

I'm actually not quite agree with that. While striking, kicking, biting should be corrected firmly, in many cases rearing is not a way to establish "alpha" or charge the handler. For example horse can be scared or confused up to the point it rears to avoid it (which is still not a good of course). I'd rather try to find a reason why horse reared and try to work from there. Especially since you can't "correct" rearing really anyway.

What I absolutely don't like is when people state themself as "trainers" and then ruin your horse or rip you off on useless lesson or (worse) teach you something completely incorrect so you have to re-learn (which is NOT easy) again with the good trainer. I run into it so many times...

People who can't ride and think they can train horses.

People who believe that they can train anything with hair on it after having been successful with a handful of horses. Never mind that those horses were initially broke by someone else, and, were all of the same type/temperment.

What irks me is people who act smug and superior because they are SOoooo above being irked - unlike we lesser mortals who are just Sooooo petty and actually get annoyed by things! By the way the title of the thread was 'what IRKS you - quite self explanatory really.

Also a person who continuously buys and sells horses. They buy looking for the perfect horse. Five minutes after being ridden by this ham fisted A-hole the horse becomes a bucker and bolter, so gets sold on as no good and the person goes on to buy and ruin another horse. Not ONCE questioning the reason every horse this person ever rides turns nasty. That IRKS me.

People who buy a gaited horse, burn up the trails with it for a few months until it breaks down, then go out and buy another one. I know a few people like this - fortunately, I don't see them more than once or twice a year, but every time I do see them, they always have a new horse and don't really say much about where their last horse ended up.:-|

-people that get jealouse(sp?)
-snotty kids who get great horses and everyone thinks they make the cutest little pair.
