FWIW, I really like my iPhone 13 Mini. In part because it DOES fit easily in my front jeans pocket and in part because I'm less likely to use it as a substitute computer. OTOH, my wife would go insane if she had a "mini" phone! I'm looking at the Horserider SOS app - https://horseridersos.com/#features. Haven't tried it but it sounds like a nice safety app. A bit off topic but something like that would - if it works - give me a real reason to take my phone AND want it to survive any fall!

Also FWIW, Wrangler jeans have wider pockets than the Levi 501s I used to wear. $19 at Walmart.

Shirt or vest pocket or if I'm wearing chaps the pocket on the right is about perfect for that. I had a Pelican phone holster clip on thing that worked great but I don't like having a bunch of stuff on my belt and just knew it would eventually come off and I wouldn't even notice.

This is what I have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08K8WP3HB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It is VERY sturdy.

As a matter of fact my phone lives in it 90% of the time. I found out I need to use the belt LOOP and not the metal clip. The case has a pocket for cards, and is where I store the SIM card pin. I just put a stick-on metal loop and wrist lanyard on the phone, so I don't drop it if I'm trying to take a picture or something.

I ride Western and just shove it down my boot... it fits nicely, doesn't bother me (though it might bother others) and doesn't interfere with my riding. Plus it's easy to access on and off the horse, and if I were to get hurt, the likelihood of me not being able to move enough to get to my boot is very slim.

I've also ridden with jogger armbands that hold my phone, but my arm is skinny enough that even the tightest setting on most armbands doesn't fit me, and I don't like the feeling of it wrapped around my upper arm anyway.

I wear cheap-o leggings when I ride so unfortunately I don't have any built-in pockets, so for now I just use a simple fanny pack made for runners since those tend to be a little sleeker than a classic fanny pack. It works alright (thought the zipper already broke), but the extra bulk around my waist does bother me a bit. Eventually I'd like to find something that goes around my arm or thigh, but for the time being the fanny pack does its job and is an easy, cheap solution for the short term.

I've tried other options with limited success. My attempts at tucking it into my waistband or bra were laughable since my phone slipped right through the second I took a step, and keeping it in my boot was extremely painful from the way it hit my ankle. So it's the fanny pack for now until I find something better.

I'm one of those people who grew up free range well before portable telephones and rode many hours though the countryside without telling anyone where I was - this was part of the fun, for many childhood activities for people from my generation, and it was normal for kids to be all over the countryside on horse, foot, bicycle, sled, skis, skates etc etc any nice weather you weren't in school or doing chores, once upon a time. You can still see this in some movies and I am so grateful to have grown up like this. The other day I was talking to one of my friends from primary school and we reminisced about all of this - she feels sorry for her nieces and nephews, and says their childhood is a far cry from what ours was, sort of like battery chickens with technological distractions - not physical, not adventurous, not hands-on, not learning about personal limits and to take risks and be safe in this world, and so - industrial, charmless, soulless, sterile.

I live very rural and it's not quite as bad here as in the human feedlots, but don't get me started on how excessive access to devices is robbing children of childhood, fitness, mental health, concentration span, problem-solving, IRL socialisation, spatial awareness etc etc.

So - I don't carry a phone riding or anywhere else when I am at leisure. It stays in the house as a landline and comes with me only when I go somewhere by car. And I don't have a Smartphone!

I do carry a multi-tool and occasionally a small iPod to take photos. The multi-tool lives in a pouch under the saddle flap in a spot where it doesn't interfere with me or the horse at all. The iPod goes in a vest pocket over my abdominal area. As @gottatrot and @LoriF pointed out, you're unlikely to fall flat on your abdomen. Also, no bones and lots of cushion means you don't get hurt by contact in that spot and the device is less likely to break too. Another good idea is a lanyard, from which you can if you wish drop the device into your bra if you have such a thing. This offers protection for your device coupled with easy accessibility for picture-taking, and you can't drop the thing this way either. A friend who does ride with a phone sticks it in her cleavage. I would find that uncomfortable but she is amply endowed and unbothered by it.

If my pants don't have pockets (most of the time I wear leggings) I'll slip my phone into the side of my waistband.
I do have a phone holder for my saddle, which I clip on & put my phone in it (I know, not the best idea but it works).

Some of my breeches have a pocket for my phone which is nice too.

I've been carrying my phone in my horn bag find fanny packs annoying to wear. Recent rides I haven't even been taking my phone I leave it at home most times.

Only time my phone is on me is come cold months. Then it goes in my inside zipper pocket of jacket.

I've had many falls out on trail an horse never takes off so really not a worry. If horses did by chance take off they'd come back home. Ride trails that are a mile an half from our driveway. Horses know there way home don't even have to tell them where to go 15 mile out on trail.

Tested that out last year let reins loose an let them take us home. They picked the trails all we did was tell them how fast or slow we went. Mostly long trotting an walking were footing wasn't good.

I shove mine under the saddle horn if I take it with me. Or I put it in a jacket pocket.

I have a waist belt with a zipped stretch pocket. When not in use it's just like a belt, but the pocket stretches enough to hold a phone on its side, and it zips securely. I also recently got some breeches that have a deep pocket on the outside of the thigh, so that's a handy option too.

I had a horse holster and loved it at first, but I was super disappointed with how quickly the velcro on the thigh strap wore out.

When you're riding, that is.

I know you want the phone on your person (not in a saddle bag) in case you and your horse are separated. I don't wear any kind of bag during a lesson, but I still want to have my phone on me (partly to take pics, partly so google will track my activity šŸ˜…).

If I put it in my pocket, I am convinced that either:
  • It will fall out and the horse will step on it.
  • It will limit my mobility (I like a chunky phone).
  • If I fall, I will land on it and it will cause additional injury and/or break the phone.

I'm sure there's a bazillion little carrying straps and such that have been invented. I did search the forum for other conversations, but the one I found was from 2009, and I'm sure other things have been invented since then.

So, what do you use? Do you have a favorite, or one that you specifically would not recommend?
I put mine in my cowboy boot. Pretty sturdy šŸ˜„šŸ˜„ I also now have bought a big black phone holster clip that hooks to my belt. Not pretty but gets the job done, the only thing that could possibly go wrong is it falling off the belt but I don’t see that happening. My phone flies out of my pocket all the time since I’m a girl and womens jeans suck lol.
My favorite is the boot lol.

(Just occured to me you might be an English rider, sorry!! I’ve heard there are britches with pocket holders, sounds cool! šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø)

I deepened the pockets on my riding breeches so I can have my phone with me while riding and it is very secure. I did it myself on my sewing machine but you could have it done at a place that does alterations/repairs.

I just wanted to post-script, in case it wasn't clear, that I'm not suggesting people don't take phones when they ride. Phones clearly have advantages for safety, not getting lost, taking photos, recording miles and routes, and listening to 99 Bottles of Beer when you're getting tired (I have to sing it myself). I was explaining why some people, usually beginning the process of fossilisation, actually do not take phones and that's OK too! And having a half-rant about the downsides of a technology which has been dubbed the new cigarette - and there are always pros and cons... ;)

This is actually the exact item I use. Can't recommend it enough!! Comfy and accessible but stays out of the way. I often forget I have it on.
