Why I don't like barrel racers

Now, before I get every barrel racer telling me that "this doesn't always happen!" I'm going to say I've competed with a lot of barrel racers and have competed non pro because I don't have the heart.
I have won.locally many times because I could walk my horse in and fly into a gallop. No rearing, no going sideways, no acting like an (to be honest) an untrained idiot. So long as they can run and maybe doing flying a lead change, let's just run!
Whatever happened to displine? Especially with trainers and riders? Oui....
Why is it so hard to teach our horses to stop amd run?

YouTube - Barrel Racing Accidents

FYI - couldnt have picked a better song for background music?! Gotta love Drowning Pool!

hahah one of my favorite things to do is watch bad barrel racing videos on youtube.

i'm not a big fan of barrel racing for a lot of the reasons. i don't often watch runs that don't make me cringe a little. but a friend of mine was telling me she never sees that stuff happen when she races.

Hey now, that's a little uncalled for..not all barrel racers and barrel horses are like that..Ouch, that actually stings and insults a little, don't judge a whole sport because of a few Youtube videos..

Gosh, I sure hate Arabians..They're all hot freaks and can't do anything but jump around and act like idiots..and those stupid costumes? Who does that? With their crazy little jingle bells and such..

Sucks doesn't it?, but I'm not going to judge a whole discipline and breed by a bunch of crazed Arabians I've seen.. And for the record..My "crazy undisciplined" barrel horses know how to run and stop..correct flying lead changes and all. Oh my!

Sucks? No. That's your opinion. Don't bother me one iota. One less Arabian for you is one more for me! :-D

Just as a side note, I have no problem with barrel horses - they don't train themselves.
And to whoever said that girl had a good seat on the bronc - I agree! Held on like a pro!

Careful now with these discpline bashing threads - they are very unfair.
I love dressage, I am a dressage rider and probably will always be a dressage rider. There are multiple videos on youtube bashing dressage, how 'cruel' we are, how EVERY dressage horse is locked in an isolated stable 24/7 and wrapped in cotton wool, brought out and worked with its chin on its chest for an hour, being spurred and yanked.

How about eventing? The horses that break their legs gong flat out galloping over solid fences?

Racing? Show jumping? Reining?

Hell, lets just say that EVERY riding discipline is cruel, and we should all just give up and learn Parelli.

Btw my trainer would shoot me between the eyes if I ever ruined my horse or rode like some of those youtube videos....[I didn't actually watch btw but trust me all those videos with the accidents came form the same ebarrelracing site. I know this because I downloaded all the raws of those exact same clips when I was still editing them for youtube]

I agree with you 100% Kayty..hmm maybe we should be even better and join the PETA parade..We'll let all of our pretty ponies go into the wild and they'll be happy forever!

SH, that's because we're two peas in a pod, don't cha know? I didn't watch it either..

I think this is so rude! Just like saying "Oh I hate Dressage, show jumping is cruel as well just to add" This thread will most likely get blocked as you will have a few barrel racers on here arguing their point.

Watch what you write in future.

My stallion did barrels and poles with his previous owner. Locally he places considerably well. However he has ALWAY been the type you can walk into the ring, stop, turn him to go and he's OFF, does his pattern, races back across the finish line, stops, and you can drop your reins and walk him out with no issues.

He did nothin but speed events for over 3 years and was always that way because his owner expected it. Don't judge everyone based on a few.

Half the people in that video suck at riding and shouldnt be on a horse because of their balance issues.

A properly trained barrel horse doesnt act like that. Ive been to alot of show over the past decade and havent seen stuff like that happen. There are alot of wanna-bes that'll give the discipline its bad name.

Dont judge a book by its cover.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that I'm one of the barrel racers with a hot horse.(;

She prances on the way in, but is in complete control. It also depends on the arena we're in. If we have to walk the length in the arena to get to start, she'll go a little sideways, but it's always corrected. She doesn't rear, buck, etc. She use to kick and throw huge bucks at the gate when I first started riding her, but I fixed that and she doesn't kick, doesn't buck, and I can walk her straight in with loose reins, and right back out on loose reins now.

I'll post a vid of me Running when I get back home if the thread's still here.:)

I dunno if you should base your entire opinion of barrel racing on just the bad riders. My horse is super calm. I've had someone laugh when I told them I was competing in barrel racing that night because my horse plods around like an old man. He walks right into the arena, and then when I give him the cue he's off like a rocket.

I will say that a LOT of barrel racers give in to the insane leg flapping, whipping the entire pattern, and basically running their horses into the ground, but not all do that. It's almost insulting when you imply that every barrel horse is crazy. For my horse, we spend quite a bit of time outside off the pattern doing trails, obstacle courses, learning poles, and other stuff so that he mind is fresh and happy when he does see a barrel pattern.

Yawn. You do realize that competing and winning some local barrel races isnt much? Running against 20-30 some riders doesnt really compare to 300-400 riders. My horse walks in the gate, true he's just starting but he's calm. My old horse pranced into the gate.

Maybe i should go dis hunters and jumpers because ive won those classes locally, actually my last hunter Hack pattern i wish i had on video my horse did so well. Oh did i mention that was my psychotic crazy barrel horse I was on? The one who 2 days later ran 5th in a rodeo?
but no I'm going to waste my time making threads about what i don't like in any discipline, because i realize there are good and bad riders in every single on. Good trainers, bad trainers. And there are so many levels to these disciplines as well.

I can't see the video in link. Is it this one?

I have to say it was funny. And in most cases it was NOT a horse's fault/training from what I see but rather the rider sitting like a sack of potato (the girl sitting the bronco horse did a great job holding on BTW).

I did go to the local barrel runs several times (just to watch), and I was quite appalled to see some people who barely can ride try to run barrels. In fact I know some of those people in person. With that being said there are also really nice horses and solid riders out there. So like in any discipline: there are good riders and good horses, wacko riders and good horses, and wacko riders and wacko horses. :)

BTW, I do agree the original post sounds like bashing to me.

....
Add in KV that a good portion of the horse falling around barrels were in the same arenas (couple of different events there) tells me that that is really, really crappy footing that does nothing to help the horse get around the barrel but can cause some spectacular crashes.... One or two I can see, but when you have MULTIPLE horses falling at the same barrel it tends to indicate a problem there as well...

I'm with the majority here. There is good and bad in EVERY discipline. Have I seen nutter contesters with riders that had no business doing anything at speed? Absolutely but I have also seen (and owned) speed horses that had extremely quiet manners and very level headed.

My old reining mare did double duty and was my go to speed horse as a teen. I could walk her in quietly, she'd stand on the line head down and calm, run a 16 or less pattern and walk as calmly out of the arena as she went in. I could go get her out of the pasture now, blow her out all the way and hand her over to my 6 year old to cool down and she'd not take a step faster than a walk.

There is overhorsed and under trained in every aspect of the horse world. Can't fault the discipline for the poor decisions of some involved in it.

You know, when my friend and I were in 4-H...many, many moons ago. We did barrel racing and keyhole...we never did anything to our horses that would have ever hurt them. We loved our babies. BUT...those foaming, flailing, riled up horses that are charging in to the arena? Yep...Vodka was one of those. Was it ANYTHING we did? NOPE! In fact, my friend had to have Vodka stand facing away from the arean because when she saw barrels she got so worked up and ready to go that you had a hard time controling her! She LOVED it. I only ever rode her one time doing barrels. I turned her and off she went! I just held on for the ride...lol She flew! I swear she was smiling the whole time.:D:lol:

In fact it has nothing to do with love or joy. It´s just a "conditioned reflex", this way you can teach a horse to do anything, often a wrong behavior patterns. A horse should be calm and relaxed, willing to do what a rider wants him to, not getting in a panic (no matter whether it´s positive for the rider - like "loving the barrels").

Is it bad I was almost laughing my butt off watching that? Someone needs (or a few someones!!) to go back and get basic riding lessons. There was hardly anyone who could keep their butts in the saddle.

That aside, I'm on the boat with this being too close to a bashing thread. Don't start something out like "OH I HATE..." because well, you have to know no one is going to go along with that. Now if you started out asking how we can help get people to get lessons BEFORE they try to race; that's different.

I have a friend who wanted to just get on and go barrel racing. I set her *** straight and told her to get some lessons first. I even had her get on my mare and watched and corrected her. She asked if she could run Indie on some barrels (which Indie is amazing at for having no formal training), and I about laughed her right back off the horse and sent her back into trying to sit a trot

I had a negitive impression of barrel racers because I have seen some really bad ones. but when I think to the ones i've actually known, they were great. the first one had hers very well trained, used to w/t/c the trails bareback with us, then would go do barrels on the weekend.

I just had a barrel racer come try a horse and she had a great seat, used her legs properly and had nice soft hands. Her and her family were wonderful, one of the few buyers that have come out and really know horses, don't expect perfection, and realize that a horse is a living thing with a personality all its own.
