Peppermints & Other Treats

I've read that peppermints are OK as a treat for horses, and the only concern from anyone is that they might cause the teeth to rot if feed too frequently. Is this true? Anyone have this happen to them?

What other treats are "good" to give? I've heard of watermelon rinds and oranges...but how much to give at one time and not have a tummy ache? :-D
Or should treats stick to what the horse would find "naturally" if it was in the wild?

Horse teeth aren't like human teeth, so they're not really prone to rot. They continue to grow through the horse's lifetime, unlike humans whose teeth don't grow once they've gotten in their adult ones.

Sugar is the main culprit, because too much sugar isn't good for horses. Too much sugar isn't good for people either, but we're talking horses here.

One or two peppermints is fine, just don't give the animal the whole bag.

One orange, sectioned, is a good, healthy treat. So is watermelon or watermelon rind.

Carrots are a great treat, but again, don't let the horse eat a whole 5 lb. bag. Same for apples.

Some folks like to feed sugar cubes, but I'm not a fan. I'd rather give them fruit, or a premade treat. I like the Manna Pro line of treats, as do all my horses. :)

I wouldn't feed them the orange rind because it's too acidic. They're not likely to eat it, anyway.

You could also try bananas and grapes. Some horses love frozen grapes as a treat.

Some horses like Peeps, but mine won't eat them. I don't blame them. Nasty, gritty, sugary little horrors! :-p

Oh I love peeps....I love them so much that when they used to only be out for easter I used to buy cases of them and put them in my freezer so I could have them all year long....mmmmm peeeps...... Dang, now you have me craving peeps.

Ok, back to the subject...my horse won't eat peeps, sugar cubes, carrots, apples, watermolon...he's a FREAK and a half. He just does not like treats.

I say if your horse enjoys them, let him enjoy them...unless he enjoys burritos or stealing juice boxes from little kids...I've seen horses get that addicted before ha ha.

I give my girls carrots and apples. I cut them up and keep a container in the fridge for them. Indi will eat just about anything but Bella will not touch peppermints at all. Some premade treats Indi will eat but not Bella. Bella will only eat treats that are apple flavored, anything else she just snuffs her nose up. My MIL sent my daughter some mini oatmeal cookies. Of course my daughter said nasty, so I took them to the barn. I give Indi one or two at a time. Of course Bella snuffs her nose up at that too! Just try different things and see what your horse likes some like Indi will eat anything, others like Bella will turn up their noses and walk away!

Mine eat peppermints, bananas, popsicles, tomatoes, oranges, kiwis, strawberrys, cucumber, mushrooms, lettuce, celery, carrots, apples, french fries, cake, coffee, soy chais, lol. The list goes on. I usually let them try just about anything [within reason, of course]. My little one will go NUTS for a banana. I don't feed her the peel, though.

The trick is feeding in moderation. I don't give treats very often. I treat after a ride to stretch, and other than that, I just keep treats around when I have people at the barn. People meet horses and want to give them treats. =] The barn owner brings out apples sometimes, so they get it then. They've had pretzels once. There was a mini I had briefly that rather enjoyed Skittles [although I gave him about three]. For the most part, you just want to stick to the "less is more" philosophy, and don't get carried away treating your horse.

Oh, I knew one horse that just loved hamburgers [not sure I agree with that one], and I used to share my bean burritoes with a horse weekly. My sister had a horse that would run you over if you didn't share your Smarties with her.

My horses get apples and carrots, and "cookies." The cookies are horse treats that we get in a 25lb bag at the feed store, Atwoods or TSC. Can't remember the brand, but it's not cheap. Rain is only four weeks old, and does seem to like bananas - at least she licks the goo off of my fingers when I eat one, and did snitch a bite of the last one I had, little brat!

When I was a kid - long before the majority of you were born - my cousin's shetland developed a fondness for cigarettes. Unfiltered, please. If you gave him a filter cigarette, he would nip the filter off and spit it out. The only thing that pony liked better than cigarettes was chewing tobacco. Forget apples and carrots and pass the 'backy!

My horses love carrots, apples, watermelons, green peppers, jelly beans, raspberries, blueberries, peppermints, sweet tea, mountain dew, cheetos, barbecue chips (as well as the hot & spicy kind), peanut butter crackers, granola bars, indian corn, and beans. In the fall we give the horses corn husks as a substitute for hay. It doesn't last very long, though; they love em!

My horse Scribbles eats EVERYTHING. I mean everythinggggg. If you put it in your palm and hold it out to him, he'll eat it. He ate a student of mines homework once, she was sitting in the barn and left a few sheets next to her, just in reach of my big idiot and he bit a chunk out of it.

I'm not a big treater, so its odd that he's so...food happy lol. I don't complain though, giving him medicine is a breeze.
